My Old Man

At the ripe old age of 85, Lennie paints everyday. Many call themselves artists, but Lennie lives and breathes it. Ask him a question about a Modigliani painting, and he'll go on to tell you not only what year Modigliani painted it, but when he was born, died, and probably the amount of money his last painting sold for. If Lennie hears Django Rinehardt play, he'll tell you about the gypsy caravan fire that cost him two of his fingers, the year the song was recorded, and who he collaborated with. 

A professor of art, a lover of jazz, Lennie's energy usually triples everyone’s around him. His house is a tomb of old cutouts from magazines, countless books on any subject imaginable, old 78's, and anything he's held onto for artist inspiration for the past who-knows-how-long. He only has a landline phone with no answering machine and definitely no computer.   Even without seemingly necessary technology, he's well-connected around Gainesville, and maintains friendships around the world.   Among the stacks of paper around his house are letters dating back from his days in World War II and correspondences with artists he admires. I've known Lennie for the past 24 years - he's my dad.

Return with Dignity

In 1997, paramilitary troops working with governmental forces entered the Cacarica River Basin in northwestern Colombia, killing dozens and forcing displacement. Some inhabitants of Cacarica were kept in a sports stadium in Turbo, Colombia for two years, guarded by paramilitaries outside. 

Humanitarian areas were established in 2001, and the people of Cacarica were able to return to their homeland, although their futures remain uncertain.

La Vida Familiar

Every year, immigrants who have built their lives in the United States are deported and forced apart from their families. 

After more than 20 years of living in the Hunters Point-Bayview neighborhood in southern San Francisco, a father of three was deported to Mexico in the middle of the night. His wife is left to raise their children, all legal citizens, even though her future in the States remains uncertain.
